Blackberry Academy is partnering with Root & Rise for summer

 Blackberry Academy Outdoor School and Root & Rise have come together for a summer of learning and outdoor adventures. Through play-based exploration and real farm experiences, children spend their days caring for animals, tending the garden, creating, cooking and discovering the natural world.

This summer, let childhood be wild, grounded, and connected

A New Adventure Each Week

June 9-12: Pollinators & Planting

Early summer planting, pollinators are active, and gardens are establishing roots.

Ripe/Ready: Strawberries, early greens, herbs.

Focus:

  • Native pollinators + observation journaling
  • Build simple bee baths & pollinator habitat
  • Strawberry harvest + garden tasting
  • Seed starting & companion planting
  • Water play through irrigation systems (build-your-own drip channels)

This week grounds kids in stewardship and ecosystem awareness.

June 16-19: Sun & Soil

Strawberry season, longer days approaching solstice.

Focus :

  • Solar energy exploration (shadow tracking, sundials)
  • Soil science: compost, worms, decomposition
  • Strawberry harvesting + simple outdoor cooking
  • Water conservation games
  • Sun safety + natural shade building

You can frame it around “how the sun feeds everything.” 

June 23-26: Water Worlds

July 7-10: Wild Independence

 

Warmer weather = water exploration time.

Focus:

  • Watersheds & where our water comes from
  • Macroinvertebrate study (if you have access)
  • Water engineering challenges (dams, canals, water wheels)
  • Evaporation experiment
  • Daily water play tied to physics concepts

This week leans into curiosity + engineering.

Post–Fourth of July energy.

Focus Ideas:

  • Shelter building
  • Knot tying & simple tool skills
  • Outdoor cooking basics
  • Map reading + navigation
  • Team challenges emphasizing cooperation

This we frame activities around freedom through competence.

July 21-24: The Hidden World

The Summer Harvest Begins! 

Ripe and Ready: zucchini, cucumbers, herbs, early tomatoes.

Focus Ideas:

  • Harvesting & preparing simple recipes
  • Plant life cycles (compare early vs. now)
  • Seed saving basics
  • Taste testing + food origins
  • Irrigation systems + water stewardship

This week is very sensory and abundant.

Insects, Decomposers & The Hidden World

Peak insect life mid-summer.

Focus:

  • Insect identification + habitat study
  • Build bug hotels
  • Compost deep dive
  • Predator/prey ecosystem game
  • Night vs. day creatures (if schedule allows)

Hot, dry patterns; possible summer storms depending on region.

Focus:

  • Build simple weather stations
  • Cloud identification
  • Heat science experiments
  • Fire ecology (age-appropriate discussion)
  • Wind engineering (kites, wind-powered builds)
  • Water play through “cooling systems” challenges.
